Born in parish of Maybole, 1812. Studied at the University and Divinity Hall, Edinburgh. Ordained minister at Madeira, 1844. Returned to this country, 1846. Settled at Dirleton, East Lothian, 1848. Died, 1852. [Vol. 2 says he left there 1850.]
Publications.—Posthumous.—Memoir of the Rev. W. H. Hewitson, by the Rev. John Baillie. Select Letters and Remains.
Supplementary Information
Background
He was born on 16th September, 1812, at Culroy in the parish of Maybole, Ayrshire. He spent some time in England but returned to Dalmellington, Ayrshire, where his father was parochial teacher.
Education
He was an assistant in a commercial Academy in Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire, before entering Edinburgh University in 1833. He finished his studies, without taking a degree, in 1841.
Ministry
He was licensed by the Presbytery of Ayr on 4th May, 1842. He suffered from poor health and medical advice was that he could not engage in any regular ministry. He then spent some time in Germany. “William H. Hewitson, Dalmellington, Ayrshire” was a name on the Roll of Probationers adhering to the Free Church. He was ordained by the Presbytery of Edinburgh on 6th November, 1844, for work in Madeira. He arrived there in the middle of February, 1845, and left early in May, 1846. He spent a short time in the West Indies, to where a section of his Madeira flock had moved. He was inducted to Dirleton, East Lothian, on 9th March, 1848.
Death
He died on 7th August, 1850, in Dirleton, East Lothian, and was buried there. “Mr H. was ordained by the Presbytery of Edinburgh with a view to missionary work among the Portuguese in Madeira, which at that time was the scene of Dr Kalley’s labours. The persecution which drove many hundreds of the Portuguese converts from that island, also interrupted Mr H.’s labours, and he removed, at the instance of the Colonial Committee, to Trinidad, where the converts had found refuge. Having subsequently returned to this country, he was settled at Dirleton in 1848. Though distinguished by superior attainments as a student, and by ardent devotion to the cause of Christ, he had all along been unable, by reason of delicate health, to labour so energetically as he desired in the work of the ministry; and after presiding at the dispensation of the communion in March last, he was altogether laid aside from the duty of the pulpit.”

HISLOP, STEPHEN
Text of Ewing’s Annals, Vol.1, p.186
Born at Duns, 1817. Brother of foregoing. Studied at the University, Edinburgh, and Divinity Halls, Glasgow and Edinburgh. In 1843 he became secretary of the Ladies’ Society for Female Education in India. Ordained, 1844, missionary to Nagpur. Married Erasma Hull. She came from Olney, the inner circle of the Evangelical school of the eighteenth century, with memories of Cowper, Newton, Carey, etc. Besides unwearying missionary labour Mr. Hislop found time to study the geology of the province in which he was stationed and to make some important and interesting discoveries. He also investigated the condition and history of the aboriginal tribes in Central India, and specially drew public attention to the Gonds, which led ultimately to the establishment of a mission amongst that tribe. In 1854 Mr. Hislop was all but murdered by a riotous mob in Nagpur, who supposed him to be a Government official engaged in removing crown jewels to Calcutta. Mr. Hislop continued at his post during the Mutiny of 1857, and his wife and children only escaped massacre by sheltering behind the cannon on the Seetabuldie Hill. On the 4th September, 1863, Mr. Hislop was drowned while attempting, on horseback, to cross a flooded stream in the dark. A subscription was made for his widow and children, of above £4000, by friends in India and at home.

HUIE, JOHN ZIEGLER
Text of Ewing’s Annals, Vol.1, p.188
Born, 1822. Studied at the University and New College, Edinburgh. Ordained by the Presbytery of Ayr for Geelong, Australia, 1846. Resigned, 1850. Settled at Dirleton, 1851. Translated to Perth, St. Leonard’s, 1853, as successor to Rev. J. Milne. Resigned, 1857, on the return of Mr. Milne from India. On the latter resuming the pastorate of his former charge, a section of the congregation broke off from St. Leonard’s, invited Mr. Huie to become their minister, built a place of worship, and were recognised as a charge of the United Presbyterian Church, 1861. Thereafter Mr. Huie proceeded to Victoria, and was inducted to a charge in 1861. Three months later he resigned connection with the Synod, and his name was dropped from the roll of the ministry.
Supplementary Information
Background
He was born on 18th October, 1822, in St Cuthbert’s, Edinburgh, the son of James Huie, accountant of excise, and his wife Marjory Ziegler. His sister Mary Gordon Huie married James Fettes, a Free Church minister.
The Huies are said to be of Huguenot descent fleeing from France on the eve of the St Bartholomew’s Day massacre.
Marriage
He married Jane Steele Main on 11th January, 1847, in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. She was born in Slamannan, Stirlingshire, being baptized on 9th August, 1818, the daughter of Robert Main, school-master, and Janet Hutchison. She was the sister of Thomas Main, a Free Church minister.
Ministry
He shared in constituting the Free Presbyterian Church of Victoria on 9th June, 1847. .He served in Geelong from 1847 till he resigned on 5th March, 1850. He served in the Free Church in Dirleton, East Lothian, from 1851 to 1853. He was inducted there on 27th March, 1851, when he was described as lately of Port Philip. He was translated to St. Leonard’s, Perth and served there from 1853 to 1857, and a section of that congregation adhered to him when he resigned on the return from India of their previous minister.
However, his situation came before the General Assembly in 1858. It was alleged that he had resigned his charge in Perth on his accepting an appointment by the Colonial Committee to do evangelistic work in Canada. But it was stated that he hadn’t gone to Canada but was employed by the London Presbytery of the English Presbyterian Church; that he had deserted his wife and refused to support her. However he himself stated that the Colonial Committee’s attitude to him had caused him to give up his appointment. He denied that he had deserted his wife: she had deserted him. He was willing to provide “such aliment as his circumstances would permit.”
He was received by the Free Presbyterian Church of Victoria on 10th April, 1861, after satisfaction had been given regarding his family situation, as his family had remained in Scotland. He was about to be inducted in Geelong when questions were raised about bizarre behaviour connected with the excessive use of alcohol, and he resigned connection with the church on 16th December, 1861. He continued an independent work there till he died.
Death
He died on 16th February, 1864, in Geelong, Victoria. His wife died in 1888 in Rothesay, Bute.

HUNTER, ROBERT, LL.D. (Aberdeen)
Text of Ewing’s Annals, Vol.1, p.188
Born at Newburgh, 1823. Studied at Marischal College, Aberdeen, taking a distinguished place as a student, especially in natural history. Ordained, 1846, as missionary to India. He was stationed at Nagpur, and laboured there till his health broke down in 1855, when he resigned his appointment. After a few years’ preaching work in Scotland, Dr. Hunter went to London in 1863. He was for a short time employed as resident tutor in the English Presbyterian College there, but resigned in 1866, and devoted himself to scientific and literary work.
Publications.—History of India. History of the Missions of the Free Church in India and Africa. The Sunday-School Teachers’ Bible Manual. Dr. Hunter was also principal compiler and editor of Cassell’s Encyclopaedic Dictionary.
Supplementary Information
Background
He was born on 3rd and baptized on 11th September, 1823, in Newburgh, Fife, the son of John Mackenzie Hunter, revenue officer, and Agnes Strickland, his wife.
Education
He matriculated at Marischal College, Aberdeen, in 1837 and graduated M.A.. He enrolled in New College, Edinburgh, 1845-46. He was awarded an LL.D. degree by Aberdeen University in 1883.
Ministry
As a probationer, he was one of the teachers in West Free Church, Coatbridge: on 1st November, 1846, the scholars of the Sunday School presented him with a Bagster’s Bible and Concordance, previous to his departure to India as a missionary. He resigned from the mission field because on 3rd September, 1857, his brother, Rev. Thomas Hunter, along with his wife and infant son, had been massacred by the “Sialkot mutineers” – part of the “Indian Mutiny” or “The First Indian War of Independence”. A doctor supported the view that his mental constitution would not allow him to return to India. (The Home and Foreign Mission Record of the Free Church of Scotland, February 1, 1858). Thomas Hunter was a Church of Scotland missionary – see FES, Vol.7, p.695. He appeared thereafter on the platform supporting various causes. In 1864 he was appointed to be resident tutor for the English Presbyterian Church College “to superintend the students residing under the roof of the college”, his annual salary being £150.
Death
In 1891 he was living in Epping, Essex, England; and he died there at his residence, Forest Retreat, on 25th February, 1897, aged 73.
